The Minho Region
Exploring the MinhoCasa Da Fonte is well-situated for exploring the Minho region. To the north is the broad valley of the River Minho which forms the northern border between Spain and Portugal. The old fortified towns of Moncao and Valenca are worth a visit especially on market day. To the east is the impressive scenery of the which is blissfully traffic free, even in August. To the west is the coast with long sandy beaches, unspoilt and uncrowded. Most notable are the beaches at Ancora, Afife and Moledo, popular with surfers but remember this is the Atlantic and the sea temperature remains cool even in summer. Caminha is a pretty town at the mouth of the Minho and the ferry across the river to Spain is a real bargain. Southwards is the River Lima with the attractive town of Ponte de Lima well worth a visit. For golfers, this is also the the location of one of the best golf courses in the area. Even further south is the famous wine producing Douro valley with up-river boat trips available from Porto. |
